Mother's Day wait at Madras Masala, Ann Arbor

It was raining on Mother's Day but still that did not stop Indians from heading over to Indian Restaurants. We headed over to Madras Masala in Ann Arbor. Can you believe it we had to wait approx. 30 minutes to be seated (Or is this typical on a Mother's Day?). Yes there were a lot of Desis who wanted to eat out at Madras Masala in Ann Arbor.

Anyway it was worth the wait as the food was great and my wife and kids loved it.

Rice going to cost more?

BBC is reporting (04/01/2008) on its website that "India introduces rice export ban". The news article states
The Indian government has banned the export of non-basmati rice to try and control soaring domestic food costs.

The decision, one of a series of measures to curb inflation, was taken during an emergency cabinet meeting.

The price for exports of aromatic basmati rice has also been raised to $1,200 per tonne to discourage exports.
It is obvious what this means for us
  • Your Grocery Bill is going to go up
  • Indian Restaurants will more than likely increase the price on Lunch Buffet and rice dishes
  • And if you have Pot Luck get together at friends place, you might be asked to bring in a rice dish or Kheer

Golden Gate a new Indian Restaurant in Rochester, MI

Molly Abraham writes in Detroit News about a new Indian Restaurant named "Golden Gate" in Rochester, Michigan.

Molly Abraham writes
Golden Gate is the creation of Qureshi Akkas Hussain, originally from Bangladesh, who spent some time in New York and also in Newcastle, England (where the natives don't need much persuasion to dig into Indian fare) before arriving in Michigan in 2000.

His Michigan experience includes being a professional waiter at two very upscale restaurants, for six years at Opus One, then moving on to Morton's the Steakhouse in Troy for a few months.

Having his own restaurant was always in the back of his mind, and when he found a suitable spot in Rochester, he decided the time was right.

Signature dishes include a number of lamb treatments, from a mild curry made with boneless lamb to ground lamb curry, and nearly as many vegetarian choices made with lentils, peas, potatoes, cauliflower and eggplant.

Those who like the convenience of the lunchtime buffet will probably appreciate the set dinners for two or four, either vegetarian or with meat, typified by this dinner combination for four ($68): an array of mixed appetizers such as samosas and pakoras, or a choice of soup, followed by chicken tikka masala, lamb karahi (boneless lamb, cooked with fresh ginger, onion, tomato, green pepper and black pepper), rice pilaf, flaky naan (the bread made in the tandoor oven), as well as dessert and coffee or spiced tea. A vegetarian dinner for four is $58.

Golden Gate is not much different from many of the modest Indian restaurants that dot the area. What sets it apart is the care and concern of its well-traveled proprietor.
More details from Detroit News:
  • Address: 125 S. Main St.,Rochester 48307
  • Phone: (248) 601-7000

India Spice celebrates one year serving the Indian American community in Michigan

If you aren't looking around while you are driving down 12 mile Road between Orchard Lake Road and Middlebelt in Farmington Hills, Michigan, you are sure to miss this restaurant located in a large strip mall. And that means that you are sure to miss out on some wonderful dining experiences.

India Spice, located at 30701 West 12 Mile Road, Farmington Hills, MI 48334 recently celebrated one year in business. They are located behind the car wash that is prominently located on 12 mile, just east of Orchard Lake Road.

They serve wonderful south and north Indian food, although their expertise is really in all the wonderful Dosas that they serve. And if you were sitting around in my family room tonight you would have heard my 18 year old daughter exclaim "I love their chutney, can we get a big box of it mom" about the sweet tamarind and the green cilentro chutneys that my daughter was literally pouring like soup over the pakoras from India Spice.

India Spice does a wonderful job with email marketing, sending out well written newsletters announcing their specials like "all you can eat dosas" and other. So, if you aren't on their email distribution list, I would recommend that you call them and get on it asap.

India Spice offers Michigan India Chamber of Commerce (www.miicc.com) members a 10% exclusive discount that is good towards dine-in orders up to $500. Some limitations may apply so check with MIICC or India Spice.

India Spice restaurant has good food and friendly service. So what are you waiting for? Check this restaurant out soon and learn more about them by visiting www.indiaspice.us.

Haandi Cusine of India in Livonia, MI

If you live in Novi, Northville, Plymouth, Livonia then you don't have to drive far for a nice, clean, reasonably priced Indian Restaurant.
Rakesh Sabharwa
Last Wednesday we decided to try out Lunch Buffet at Haandi Cuisine of India in Livonia, MI (Directions). It was worth every penny. We enjoyed it. The Buffet had quite a few items (Chicken Korma, Tandoori Chicken, Chilli Chicken, Panner Rolls, Spring Rolls, Bharta, Rajma, Curry (with Pakora). This in addition to Rice, Naan, corn soup and for dessert they had fruit custard.

I spoke to Rakesh Sabharwal (the owner who by the way is a extremely courteous and soft spoken gentelman) who mentioned that on weekend they also serve goat/lamb meat in their buffet.

The only thing is that the food has "North India" written all over it. In order to attract more people, Haandi owners would might want to consider including other dishes like, vada sambar, dosa, pav bhaji.

Rangoli Restaurant Reviews at Yahoo Local

If you ever want to find out what others feel about a restaurant, then check out Restaurant Reviews at Yahoo Local.

One of the restaurants I was looking at was Rangoli Indian Cusine, located at 3055 E Walton Blvd, Auburn Hills, MI 48326. I will mention couple of reviews here. You can check out more by visiting Yahoo Local.
Positive:
- fantastic and fresh: Good selection and great tasting food.
For those new to Indian food, try the samosas, masala dosa, and chicken tiki masala. Yum!

- Best Indian cuisine I have ever eaten: Paneer chilli and other paneer items are good. Some items are really expensive. We should get coupons in mail.
Negative:
Wrongoli: Small proportions…. High prices… and mediocre at best food…
